Ain't politics weird?Deciminyanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17564328932408891465noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4277252353094864173.post-30155475267146856232010-09-16T12:45:42.828-04:002010-09-16T12:45:42.828-04:00Actually, I consider all those things constitution...Actually, I consider all those things constitutional, so we don't agree, but at least we are both consistent.

To see if urban school districts are at all fixable, keep an eye on Washington, DC, where the black liberal mayor who focused on school reform lost badly in his reelection bid to a black liberal councilman who seems focused more on the welfare of various unions than he is in the welfare of the city's students.Glen Hhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14763536109594088795noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4277252353094864173.post-42720610620038410672010-09-16T10:04:14.487-04:002010-09-16T10:04:14.487-04:00Glen, those are good comments and point out where ...Glen, those are good comments and point out where we fundamentally don't agree. If you grant the argument that the public schools are broken, I would contend that they should be fixed, not abandoned. The voucher program skims off the students that are more easily educated, making public education more difficult.

And I agree with you on the fact that tax deductions to for donations to religious institutions are unconstitutional, as are tax exemptions for their property.Deciminyanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17564328932408891465noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4277252353094864173.post-41808546362346203482010-09-15T22:36:13.399-04:002010-09-15T22:36:13.399-04:00These arguments are all well and good, but what do...These arguments are all well and good, but what do you say to a mother in Camden or Newark or Jersey City that desperately wants a decent education for her kids?

If a government fails to provide the services it is committed to provide, why is it a bad thing for that government to encourage others who might do better at providing it?

The argument that vouchers take away resources from government schools is specious. Washington, DC spends something like $22,000 per student per year. Their schools are atrocious, but not for lack of funds.

If there were ever an issue that might loosen the stranglehold the Democratic party holds on black voters, this is it.

And how is providing vouchers that might be spent on religious schools any more constitutionally suspect than providing tax deductions for donations to churches? Are government-subsidized student loans used to go to religious colleges unconstitutional?Glen Hhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14763536109594088795noreply@blogger.com
